Over the past term, artists Cherry Chung and Jane Doyle have been working with pupils from St Mary’s Primary School to create a striking willow sculpture inspired by Katsushika Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Drawing on natural materials grown within the school grounds, the project has given pupils the opportunity to explore creativity, sustainability and large-scale collaborative making.
Earlier this month, the school visited the exhibition to develop ideas and create their own responses to the artworks on display. Using a wide range of media — including digital light painting, sketching, charcoal drawing and weaving — pupils experimented with different techniques whilst connecting to our exhibition, green spaces and community garden.

We would like to thank all of the pupils, staff and artists for their time, enthusiasm and dedication throughout the project. We are also looking forward to welcoming the community and family audiences back on 18 July for another celebration of willow creativity and making.
